RESTAURANT MAKEOVER
Unless you are a resident of Kemaman for more than 5 years or you're a 'biker', you probably would not know the existence of "SPEEDY CORNER" kopitiam. It was the very first kopitiam in Kemaman that paved the way for a number of 'kopitiams' that exist in Kemaman today. Located at Taman Chukai Utama Fasa 2 (belakang kedai tayar Silverstone , next to the Balai Bomba) , Speedy Corner reached the end of its glory days early last year.
BEFORE: The building exterior .......a bikerz haven......
appreciate the graffiti ......but not a makcik's dining destination .......i personally have been there only ONCE .......i'm sori....but can get better food at roadside stalls....poor service...and obviously i don't belong to the niche group that they're targetting for....too bad!
IN PROGRESS: Got rid of the awning.....we keep the top graffiti & repaint the bottom walls....finally new signage ... insyaAllah more inviting for the customers....
BEFORE: The interior....ok la....typical kopitiam style interiors.....the owner must've invested a fortune on carpentry work....the counter cabinets , display cabinets etc.Can definitely reuse / modify where necessary......Small dining area, a bikerz boutique at the back there, even an internet station.....hmmmm..
but what's those Indonesian teakwood items and English country decor doing in here......?? They also sell jewellery and jus mengkudu....?trying to lure in the makciks kot......he3...too late already....
(Ampuuunnnnn pakkkkk....should've silently said this in my heart...)
First of all, many thanks to the new management for this precious opportunity....
The management has decided to change their business concept to the following:
Food: Western (International) & Chinese fine cuisine
Service: Fine dining (hotel standard)
NO MORE KOPITIAM KA.....SO WE TRY OUR BEST TO RENOVATE AS PER THE NEW CONCEPT LAH.....
The first thing we did was to identify the zones thus reflecting a new layout plan.
IN PROGRESS :All existing cabinets are moved and aligned to the back , creating a partition between the kitchen zone and the dining zone. The existing kitchen is converted into chinese kitchen (for goreng2 stuffs) and the front kitchen is for the western food preparation(grilling etc). Next to the western kitchen is the beverage area. The cashier's counter is also moved to the back.Electrical wiring work in progress...
almost done.....
AFTER : new plaster ceiling with downlights , new lamps , larger dining are that comfortably sits 60 people
AFTER : new banquette seating area for group dining (20 pax)
We needed to create a separate entrance to the sinks and bathroom for the guests, so we hacked an opening on one wall behind the counter for that purpose. Since the biker shop is now removed, we need to retile the floors too....
In addition, we fixed the clogged floor trap, retiled the existing bathroom floor and changed the door, mirror, hose bidet , wc and sink....all new sanitaryware.
We also redo the electrical wiring , installed plaster ceiling with downlights , new fans, lamps , wallpapers, new dining sets , banquette seating at one corner and a sofa area at the front....
Here are the AFTER PHOTOS.........
the new dining area
fit for fine dining experience
the new decor
elegant contemporary design
the food & service????
well , yet to discover....hope they match with our design....he3

AFTER - the tv is on the wall where the mural painting was, all electrical wirings concealed , cabinet removed,we built a storage under the staircase and created a small bakery section in front, next to the sofa area
STOP!
The biggest mistake that we always make is that we usually fail to follow through the concept. Be it a home decor or commercial interiors, we must be able to follow through with the initial concept that we want to achieve.....never ever digress until the end....! In an eating establishment, the three most important aspects that must be in line with the whole business concept are FOOD , SERVICE and INTERIOR DESIGN.......STOP!

EXTREME MAKEOVER
BEHIND THE SCENE OF THE EXTREME MAKEOVER
MISSION
To RENOVATE & EXPAND existing meeting room by cutting through the parti wall & constructing foldable doors as partition.
To RELOCATE an office to another location
work began 18 Dec ,2009....to finish by 31 Dec 2009.....(mission impossible!)
last reno : 10 years ago (??)
The RENOVATION works includes:
installation of laminated wood flooring
construction of new plaster ceiling c/w downlights
installation of wallpapers
construction of new meeting tables
upgrade existing cabinet doors by installing mica
varnishing & changing fabric on notice board
projector screens , electrical works , eubiq power extensions on meeting tables
roller blinds & other furnishings
DAY ONE
Our mission for the extreme makeover of an office began with the demolition / dismantling process. Heavy furniture transported....existing ceiling removed....gypsum wall sawed through....I'll let the photos do the talking lah...
DAY 2
Site clearance done....ready for the plaster ceiling works.
DAY 3
Haaa...ceiling at small office done....now can install the downlights. Meeting room ceiling work continues....In the meantime ,wallpaper selected for the small office..
DAY 4
Plaster ceiling done.....a/cond ducts , smoke detectors, speakers reinstalled.
DAY 5 & 6
Wallpaper installation....glad to have my "Besut" team this time around...they are the ones who installed the wallpapers in MB's house & other big govt projects...together with painting the ceiling by a professional painter from Kuantan...not a drop of paint on the walls, okey....!
DAY 7
After a week break due to the year end holidays , our work resumed (we even worked on new year's day 2010, mind you!) with the installation of laminated wood flooring and finishing touches for the small office.
DAY 8
Laminated wood flooring installation in the meeting room continues....however , halfway through our client decided to add subfloor cable for a new projector (or did they overlook this before we start work??) Grrrrr...anyway.....
DAY 9 & 10
Folding door panels finally installed......meeting tables assembled.....varnishing work began.....gruelling to the max!
DAY 11
Phew....all 'dirty' jobs done!
The weekend we decided to add a service manhole in the ceiling due to the extensive cabling works that run above the ceiling....all for the clients ease of future maintenance...
We also reupholster the notice board...from red to black....you notice?
DAY 12
The meeting room is coming together now.....frames, clocks hung & books /accessories arranged in the cabinets. Time to re-install the old projector...only when we find the cable somewhere above the ceiling...oops...there they are...!Client wanted to add more things on the table??? Oh tidakkk...no more drilling holes in our tables plizzzz....hope we can achieve a much neater meeting table by using the built in power extensions.....we trylah ya....see if our design idea works....
DAY 13
Installation of eubiq power extension on the meeting tables. check out www.eubiq.com
for more details on this product.
DAY 14
Lastly, after another week or so, the installation of projector screens......finally all listed jobs completed!
The final step is furniture & accessories arrangement....of course some repair work here & there..........until the client is fully satisfied.....errrrrr is that possible??? DREAM ON lah kak juli....we're NOT perfect....but after all these extreme daunting episodes, a thank u note from a client would be nice...kannnn?
The jobs were completed in 14 non-consecutive days within 5 weeks time span.
Looking at these pics I'm glad all of our works are captured visually....and regardless of all glitches along the way, ALHAMDULILLAH for another mission accomplished.
We wish thank our client for the opportunity and let's just pray that the newly renovated rooms are maintained well for another 10 years....
Note to client: Don't forget to feed the plants ya boss....thank you.
